ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA NECKLACE

Beautiful and unique necklace honoring St. Teresa of Calcutta.

She was called. She met her Savior in the slums of the poor.

She was love, protection, encouragement and comforter.

Agnes Bojaxhiu was born on August 26, 1910 into a loving family. Her parents, Nicholas and Rosa were devoted to their three children Aga, Lazar and Agnes. Their days of happiness were numbered when their father suddenly died. Agnes was seven years old. Their home had always been a devout one but now their faith began to radiate even more. Her young life was centered around the Church. Agnes was very involved in the Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart.

At the age of 18, Agnes joined the Loreto Sisters of Dublin, far from her family and the life she knew. She would never see her family again in this life. Fascinated by missionary life, she departed to India in December, 1929. She made her First Profession of Vows in 1931. She chose the name of Teresa honoring St. Therese of Lisieux. She was sent to teach at St. Mary's School for girls in Calcutta. She spent the next 15 years dedicated to teaching and her students.

She received her second calling in 1946 as she traveled to Darjeeling for a retreat. She said "She heard the call to give up all and follow Christ into the slums to see him among the poorest of the poor." With permission from Pope Pius XII, she left her community of nuns and went back to Calcutta to begin her new undertaking. She persevered, labored and loved. She started teaching the children of the slums and soon many young women volunteered their services and later became the core of her Missionaries of Charity. She opened homes for the dying, lepers, orphans and disabled. She opened schools for children. she opened hospitals for the sick. She worked until her death in 1997, depending on God for all of her needs.

St. Teresa of Calcutta is the patroness of workers of mercy and World Youth Day. Her feast day is celebrated September 5th.

This unique hand cast bronze medal of St. Teresa of Calcutta is suspended from a beautiful handmade necklace. Beautiful blue and white faceted beads representing the habit of the Missionaries of Charity adorn the medal. The necklace is approx. 18" long and the drop is 2 1/2". The medal is 3/4". On the back of the medal is a cross and it says "I thirst, you did it to me."
