Born Francesco Forgione in southern Italy, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers. Francesco joined the Capuchins at the age of 15 and took the name of Pio. He was ordained on August 10, 1910. On September 20, 1918 when Padre Pio was offering a Mass of thanksgiving he had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, Padre Pio had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received the stigmata. He offered Mass every morning at 5a.m. and spent countless hours hearing confessions and blessing the sick.

God endowed Padre Pio with many extraordinary spiritual gifts and charisms including the gift of healing, bilocation, prophecy, miracles, discernment of spirits and the gift of tongues and the gift of conversions.

Worn out by over half a century of intense suffering and constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one with the words, "Jesus" "Mary" on his lips! After a public funeral, which attracted over 100,000 mourners, his body was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. His incorrupt body is now on display in the tomb inside the Church. Increasing numbers flock to his tomb from all parts of the world and many testify to spiritual and temporal graces received. The Sanctuary of St. Pio of Pietrelcina is located in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.

You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son. Endowed with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls.
With reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ
in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
